Rose keeps his title hopes alive despite losing ground

DONCASTER duo James Rose and Dean Hipwell competed in the penultimate round of the British Superstock 600 and British Supersport championships respectively last weekend on the fast Silverstone GP circuit.

Rose dropped to third in the championship with a fourth place finish, whilst Hipwell finished the weekend with two top 15 places. Championship leader Ben Burke failed to finish, leaving Rose five points adrift of the top two who are on equal points.

Rose will have to score six more championship points than his two rivals in the last round if he is to lift the title although he cannot be beaten for third spot.

With Hipwell’s Globalnet Telecoms Yamaha still down on top end speed in Sunday morning’s warm-up session, the CDH team decided to put the spare engine in prior to the afternoon’s race as well as making a a few minor adjustments to the suspension and fuel settings.

Starting 14th, Hipwell didn’t get off to a good start in the race dropping back to 16th on lap one then with Pekkanen dropping out on lap two he was back up into 15th place.

He maintained this position until lap six and with another front runner crashing out moved up another place and was well clear of the chasing group with a five second advantage.

Hipwell closed the gap to the rider in front to half a second and was looking to get past when with four laps remaining his rear tyre started to go off.

He was in danger of losing the back end when cornering and decided to ease up and settle for 14th place. But he managed to pass Nikki Coates on the last lap to take the chequered flag in 13th place and bank seven points to climb to 13th place in the Championship.
