Rugby League: Scarrow aims to prolong Dons feelgood factor

DONCASTER Rugby League Club chairman John Scarrow hopes that the current feel-good factor around the club can remain strong heading into next season.

Scarrow was as proud as anyone in the Halliwell Jones Stadium last weekend after seeing the Dons clinch the Championship One Grand Final with a narrow victory over Barrow Raiders.

The win secured the club their first championship title since they were formed in the early 1950s and it capped off a season where the Dons, who also won the League Leaders’ Trophy, secured promotion back to the second tier with a formidable home record to boot.

“There’s a real buzz around this club at the moment,” he said. “We’ve gone 61 years without winning anything and all of a sudden we’ve got a league championship, a play-off final win and we also got four awards at the Championships dinner the other week, so everything’s really positive around the place right now.”

Scarrow is already planning ahead for next year and revealed that the club is close to agreeing terms with a new sponsor.

A restructured Championship will see 14 teams compete, and with nine of those being from Yorkshire, Scarrow sees the potential for increased Keepmoat crowds.

“It’s three years since we (the current board) took over and since that time our gates have gone up 44 per cent, and with several derbies to look forward to next season, we expect attendances to remain high for the next campaign,” he said.

Scarrow also hopes that the success of the Dons neighbours, Sheffield Eagles, can help bring a resurgence to the sport in South Yorkshire.

The Eagles were also winners on Sunday, edging Featherstone in the Championship Grand Final.

“We’ve now got two teams who are doing really well in this region, and so we need to keep that buzz going,” he admitted.

“Days like last Sunday are massive contribution to helping achieving that.”
