A scaffolder at Drax Power Station has raised a lot of steam – and a whole lot of cash – by running a series of marathons this year.

And by the time he completed the Great North Run, 33-year-old Selby man Martin Lambert had collected over £3,000 for the Thomas Cammack appeal in memory of the Selby boy who tragically died of a form of cancer known as neuroblastoma.

In the past six months Martin has also run the Silverstone half-marathon, the Manchester 10K, the Keswick Marathon and the York Jane Tomlinson 10K.

Wife Laura explained: “Martin is a childhood friend of Thomas’ mum Toni Wood and, after hearing about his illness last year and that they were trying to raise the money to get him to New York for lifesaving treatment, he decided to help with a series of five runs. Thomas sadly passed away, but Martin was determined to carry on with his challenge in his memory as well as to raise awareness and support other families going through the same thing. Thomas is such an inspiration to Martin – he fought all he had against the disease, showed no fear and was always smiling.”

Also completing the Great North were four Selby Striders – Simon Harvey (1.34.43), Debbie Scott (2.08.10), Zoey Heneachon (1.59.10) and Vicki Kirkham (2.03.14) – but they were led home by clubmate Rob McWilliam in 1.21.50, with another Strider, Anne Everitt, clocking 2.11.

Rob said: “It puts to bed the myth about the loneliness of the long-distance runner with 50,000 entries and many more lining the route.”

Simon recorded a personal best, knocking six minutes off last year’s time. And the club are always looking for new members. See their website at www.selbystriders.org.uk
