Silver medallist set for Selby boxing show
Members of Mickeys Amateur Boxing Club in Selby gear up for a night of boxing at Eggborough Sports & Social Club later this month.
Selby-based Mickey’s Boxing Academy kick off their new season with a show at the Eggborough Sports Complex on Friday October 26.
Team GB boxer, Commonwealth silver medallist and Rio de Janeiro hopeful Darren Tetley is included in the 14-bout event along with a dozen home boxers and the evening is being held in memory of Phil Cleary and Beanie Smith, who both died tragically on the roads. A collection will also be taken in aid of Cancer Research, the chosen charity of Phil’s widow Gemma.
Phil, who was killed in a motorbike accident just two days after his wedding, brought his kids to the academy’s Douglas Street gym while Beanie, who died in a car crash aged just 15, also had connections with the club. Her brother boxed for them last season and her three cousins are still involved.
Tickets at £10 are available from the gym or Josh at the Beckenzi Inc Tattoo Studio on Flaxley Road or by calling head coach Mickey Bradshaw on 0779 086 7797.
Early booking is advisable as previous shows have been sold out. Doors open at 7pm with bouts starting at 8pm. Businesses wishing to sponsor the bouts should also call Mickey.
