walking out of the ground at 4.50 on Saturday night, another three points in the bag, who would have envisaged what the next 24 hours held in store for Rovers.
Fans were thinking we are joint top, not the best performance, but three points will do nicely. Then, come late evening as we, like John Ryan, enjoyed a tipple to celebrate the victory, Sky Sports announced that Wolves had sacked their manager, after defeat in the FA Cup to non league Luton, and that Dean Saunders had been approached. I thought Sean O’Driscoll would be a perfect canidate for the job at Molenieux. As things unfolded it became more apparent that Dean was favourite and by Sunday night the deal was done.
The speed at which it all happened was a surprise to all, but it was all carried out honourably. All Rovers fans wish Dean, Brian and Mal the best of luck, and say thanks for how they have turned the club around. Ok it may not have been the prettiest football we have witnessed, but it’s a results- based business, and nobody can argue about the results we have had this season.
Dean was left with a threadbare squad for the first four months of the season, and if we avoid defeat tomorrow at Stevenage, we will have suppassed what the great team of 46/47 acheived in respect of away games unbeaten.
I found Dean to be a breath of fresh air in the press room, upbeat most of the time, he could always put on a positive spin whatever the result. A bit of a joker, but very press friendly, he is the only recent manager to encourage players from the youth team to progress, and put the team spirit back into the side.
One of his last tasks was to bring Lee Fowler into the team. He gave a brilliant post match interview, tearing up his Fleetwood contract to play for Dean, saying how he had been thrust into the highlife too early, gone off the rails, but kicked himself up the jacksie, and is now totally focused on football. He could be our missing link, the new Richie Wellens (that’s if Dean don’t nick him to play in the Black Country, lol).
Saturday’s game was not much to write home about, but the goal was worthy of wining any game, a trade-mark David Cotterill special, curling the ball in from 20 yards, after picking up the ball on the half way line.
I’m not too sure if John and the board were ready for the fans forum on Monday night, but it was a great piece of PR for the club. I especailly liked how they thought of the deaf fans who regularly attend the home and away games in by enlisting a signer to keep the fans informed of what was being said during the forum.
After complaints that we had not Sky or BBC live match coverage, they go and put our away game at Crawley back two days to a Monday night at 7.45 on February 18, with no consideration for the fans who had already bought train tickets and booked to spend the weekend
down there. But when has Sky been bothered about non-armchair fans?
Let’s hope for three more points tomorrow and breaking that record, under ‘Corporal’ Jones and Brian ‘Errol’ Flynn.
