Ripon RUFC........................ 16

Selby RUFC......................... 36

With the host team prevented from crossing the whitewash right up until the 79th minute thanks to Selby’s strong defence, the Swans were flying at the top of the Yorkshire 2 league after their trip to Ripon.

But the home side were no pushover and in fact dominated the early stages with vigorous forward play earning them a three-point lead.

And though Josh Cruise soon levelled matters, this was more or less how it stayed for most of the first half with neither side giving any quarter.

The breakdown was fiercely contested as Prothero, Blaymire and Wood caused real problems for Ripon with counter-rucking, pick ‘n’ goes and strong ball carries.

Selby led 13-6 at half-time with neither side really having the upper hand. And though Ripon were first out of the blocks on the resumption, Selby’s forwards repelled the onslaught. And as probing runs from Robinson and Webster, supported by Lunt, Clark and Knowles, continued to stretch the home backs, skipper Duncan Hardy got the first try after Jack Daniels broke to within two yards of the line, with Cruise converting.

A series of excellent Cruise kicks along with good lineouts then created the platform for Selby to move up a gear which saw Daniels sprint 45m to score and, while more points came from penalties, a turnover in Selby’s 22 released Ben Lunt to sprint 80 yards to the line.

Josh Greenfield then touched down for the try of the day which came from a well-worked counter-attack deep in Selby’s own half also involving Cruise, Daniels and man of the match Webster. Triffit worked hard in the tight and made a significant contribution in attack.
