Switch off at power valley
Selby Town...................................... 1
Formby............................................ 5
Although things looked promising for the beleaguered Robins when Louis Grant chipped the keeper to equalise just before half-time in their FA Vase 2nd qualifying round, it all went pear-shaped after that as Lancashire side Formby ran away with the spoils.
Describing the Selby side as “exotic” opponents from “Megawatt Valley” (an obvious reference to the area’s three large power stations), the Squirrels’ scribe added that our smooth and level pitch would make some of their more familiar Pennine opponents turn as green as our fine turf.
Town’s defence soon cracked under the Formby onslaught with Emini Adegbenro scoring the first of a brace, but Grant got the hosts back on track after earlier being denied by an acrobatic dive. Visiting captain Paul Speed then scored himself, with Jason Carey adding the other two and going close to a hat-trick before Selby’s David Heron was only denied by a full-length dive.
Things got no better on Tuesday night when Town – once again with ex-Robins among the opposition line-up – were shot down 4-0 at Hemsworth MW after having to defend against neat, fast and direct football for the full 90 minutes. And when Chris Dickman’s frustration eventually boiled over in the 88th minute, he was shown a red card for dissent. Saturday’s match is at Worsborough, Barnsley, off the A61 to Sheffield.
