Thorne run in six tries to record emphatic Silver Trophy tiumph

HIGH-flying Yorkshire Three side Thornensians brushed aside Fourth Division Wetherby’s challenge to run out 42-12 winners in the Yorkshire Silver Trophy first round.

Thorne turned round 28-0 ahead but were guilty of taking their eye off the ball at times in the second half and failed to score in the last 15 minutes.

The visitors went ahead with the first of their six converted tries when winger Danny Gilbert raced over and Mike Beckett added the points.

Thorne travelled with a squad of only 16 players and their second try came from Brett Hunt, who normally operates on the wing but who turned out at full-back.

Centre Oli Cox got the next touchdown before Gilbert bagged his second try.

Thorne’s replacement flanker Chay Maw scored ten minutes into the second half. Winger Daz Sutton notched their final try.

Division Five strugglers Rossington Hornets went down 38-17 in their first round home tie against Aireborough.

The visitors opened up a 19-5 half-ime lead, Hornets’ first-half points coming from a try by centre Kai Wheatley.

Although Rossington lost Wheatley in the second half, they kept in the hunt with tries from full-back Aaron McMahon and prop Robert Bostock, the latter converted by Marcus Anderson.

Doncaster Amateurs continued their march towards the Yorkshire Five title with a 47-5 win against Wibsey.

Winger Ollie Prescott went in for a hat-trick of tries, with centre Simon Honey bagging a brace. Fly-half Mark Steadman also touched down and kicked six conversions for Amateurs, who take on third-placed Sheffield Oaks this weekend.
