Tiger Tom back for starring role!
Hull City's Tom Cairney in action against Leeds United's Paul Connolly.
After being a bit-part player for much of the season, Kellington’s Tom Cairney was restored to a starring role as he helped Hull City progress in the FA Cup with a 3-1 win over Ipswich Town at the KC Stadium.
And caretaker-manager Nick Barmby declared his first-half strike as the goal of the third round.
The former Brayton High School pupil produced a sublime finish to make it 2-0 in the 32nd minute, catching Arran Lee-Barrett just off his line from 25 yards for his first of a stop-start season.
Barmby used the match to give some of his fringe players a run-out – making seven changes in total – and was delighted to see Cairney take his opportunity with an effort he believes is as good as any scored across the country.
“It was really good to get 90 minutes from Tom today. When you look at his goal – our second – that’s what he can do. It’s just great technique and you probably won’t see a better goal in the FA Cup in this third round. I was very pleased.”
Cairney, whose successful efforts as captain of the Kellington Primary School team were closely followed in these pages a decade or so ago, made a big impression when he first turned out for the Tigers, but has since been somewhat on the sidelines. It’s great to see him back where he belongs. The victory earns Hull a home tie against Crawley in round 4.
