Tiger Tom tries to stave off cup humiliation
Hull City's Tom Cairney in action against Leeds United's Paul Connolly.
Kellington’s Tom Cairney (left) was in the thick of the action as Hull City were dealt a footballing lesson with an FA Cup fourth round defeat by League Two giant-killers Crawley Town.
And City striker Josh King delivered a damning verdict on his team’s humiliating 1-0 loss by claiming the visitors had not even played well on a bitterly cold afternoon at the KC Stadium.
Hull did not manage an effort until the 27th minute when Liam Cooper headed harmlessly wide from Cairney’s floated free-kick, though they almost went in front when Robbie Brady’s shot from distance was brilliantly turned round the post by Shearer.
And when the former Brayton High School pupil drew another fine stop from Shearer just after the break, one sensed that Hull – no doubt inspired by some stern words from manager Nick Barmby at half-time – might finally start to justify their Championship status. But it was Crawley – 45 places below City in the footballing pyramid – who re-grouped and reclaimed the initiative, three times going close in as many minutes before Matt Tubbs finally latched onto a through ball to sink the hosts with his 57th minute winner.
The visitors made a mockery of the two-division gap as Tigers appeared guilty of complacency, though Barmby denied this was a factor.
