Top rugby fixture will be the talk of the town
SELBY RUFC will play host to yet another prestigious fixture when Leeds Academy face Saracens Academy tomorrow, writes Paul Gabel.
Leeds Academy has established a reputation as one of the leading academies in the country. The aim of the academy is to produce players for the Leeds Carnegie first team as well as developing players who have the potential to step up and represent their country on the international scene.
A strong and healthy academy system is key to any team’s long term success and Leeds Carnegie understands the importance of working with local clubs and how to uncover some of the county’s most talented players.
Leeds’ commitment to grassroots rugby is essential to the success of the club for the future and by Selby RUFC hosting this fixture it will allow players of the future to see the level they need to aim for on the road to becoming an England international, just as two of Leeds players - Tom Palmer and Danny Care - have done in the past.
Club president Reg Phillips, said: “Selby RUFC are proud to be asked to host this fixture as it shows that our reputation in Yorkshire is highly thought of.”
Nick Wright, director of facilities, added: “Selby is an amateur club and has some of the best facilities in Yorkshire and with our new stand can accommodate spectators with a perfect pitchside view of the action.”
Selby RUFC have hosted some fantastic fixtures of late, including the Yorkshire Ladies’ sides at under-15s, under-18s and seniors level. However, the town’s rugby club is more than just about sport.
With its five senior sides and fantastic junior section comes a family atmosphere second to none. The club is available for hire to parties and events all year round.

But back to the rugby and what promises to be a mouth-watering fixture this weekend.
The club are hoping to see many new and old faces in the crowds to cheer on what will be a tough result to call.
There is no entrance fee for the match at Sandhill Lane, off Leeds Road. Kick-off is 2pm.
