Vikings slain as Warriors run them ragged
Selby Warriors............................... 44
Hoyland Vikings............................. 14
Chris O’Neill completed a stunning hat-trick in the dying minutes of the game as Warriors got back to winning ways with a fine team performance, writes Kevin Fellows.
After falling behind to a controversial try against the run of play (when a Viking was clearly tackled into touch), the Selby rugby league side showed plenty of spirit as they bounced straight back through Kurt Cookson.
And after Hoyland capitalised on poor handling to take the lead for a second time with a converted try under the posts, hardworking Zennon Horrocks equalised with a try converted by Jimmy Hanson.
And once Jimmy scored himself in the corner, and also added the goal, Warriors never looked back.
Paul Fellows then side-stepped his way over in the corner for Hanson to add another excellent touchline conversion, and the half-time score was 22-10.
John Broadhurst barged over shortly after the break before O’Neill began his try-spree – his second after running almost the entire length of the pitch – with the sure-footed Hanson adding most of the extras, except when the referee ruled a kick that appeared to have gone over had actually strayed wide.
Vikings got another one back in the corner after a neat pass from their stand-off, but it was Selby’s day with Wayne Fennell taking man of the match and Mark Hanson also showing up well among the forwards.
Warriors travel to Stainland Stags this weekend when they hope to keep up their good form. Junior reports on page 39
