Young Bears benefit from £500 BT boost
A junior rugby league club in Sherburn will benefit from new training equipment and coaching development thanks to a £500 boost from BT through the voluntary work of employee Rhys Hughes.
It was all part of the BT Community Champions award scheme to fund community groups where employees work on a voluntary basis.
Sherburn Bears U8s is one of hundreds of groups that applied for a grant and impressed the judges with how they would use it.
Club secretary Paul Dutson said: “At the moment we have a lot of interest in the new U8s, but we are short of equipment. With the award we can now purchase the items needed for both training sessions and game days.
“However, with the amount of interest shown from the local community, the club needs to expand its coaching staff with immediate effect, and the award can allow us to do this. This is an excellent opportunity to build an even closer community and develop the children taking part.”
Rhys Hughes, a customer service engineer for BT Openreach who applied for the award on behalf of the group, added: “I have been a volunteer at Sherburn Bears for a year now. We are always low on resources and funding is hard to come by. The BT award scheme provides a great opportunity for community groups like ours as every contribution makes a difference. The new equipment and coaches will have a huge impact on the activities run by the club.”
